Society: the French are worried

Every year, the Economic, Social and Environmental Council publishes its annual report on the state of France. The aim is to understand the state of mind of the French people. To draw up this report, the Council used the results of an exclusive survey conducted by Ipsos.

The survey was conducted between September 1 and 14, 2023, among a sample of 1,256 French people (aged 18 and over).

Generally speaking, the French are relatively optimistic about their personal future (61%). On the other hand, they are very pessimistic about the future of their children (74%) and the country (70%). The most important personal concerns of panellists include:
• Purchasing power (40%)
• Health (37%)
• Environment (32%)
• Incivilities (32%)

Well-being at half-mast
“The personal level of well-being of the French is generally satisfactory, although this satisfaction is not very pronounced: only one individual in five claims to feel very well,” analyzes Ipsos.
What brings respondents the most joy are family relationships (57%) and good health. Only 29% say that their financial situation contributes to their morale.
“When asked what hinders their well-being, the French cite lack of time and money above all… but also, at a high level, anxiety about the climate,” continues Ipsos.
