Packaging: what are consumers' preferences?

The issue of packaging (and its sustainable profile) is central in the beauty sector. Ball, a company specializing in the manufacture of aluminum bottles (for the cosmetics industry) conducted a study to learn more about the uses and tastes of the general public in terms of packaging.

The survey was conducted among a sample of 1,600 people living in the United States, Mexico, Brazil, the United Kingdom, France and Germany.

In general, respondents pay attention to the way their cosmetics are packaged.
45% check that the packaging is environmentally friendly and 50% of them prefer to buy a product with recyclable packaging.

However, safety and the ability of a package to protect the product it contains are crucial for the panelists.

Usage and perception

“When citizens reflect on their preferences for household and personal care packaging, their attention is focused on convenience, recyclability and safety. Younger consumers, in particular, are increasingly sensitive to higher quality materials.”

Ball sought to find out how panelists positioned themselves in relation to different raw materials.
Overall, they perceive plastic as bad for the planet and cardboard as a good alternative. Aluminum and glass are seen as premium solutions.
On the other hand, while the respondents say they appreciate the durable profile of glass, they all point out that it can break easily (and therefore be dangerous).
