The European Green Deal and its impact on cosmetic products

Presented in December 2019, the European Green Deal is an action plan to transform the European Union’s economy to meet the challenges of climate change and make it sustainable. It is within this framework that a “Chemicals Strategy towards a Toxics Free Environment” was adopted in October 2020. At the Cosmetic Valley Perfumes & Cosmetics Congress, which was held digitally on 4 and 5 November 2020, Gerald Renner, Director of Technical Regulatory Affairs at Cosmetics Europe, presented the main lines of the strategy and detailed its implications for the cosmetics sector.

The European Green Deal is the growth strategy defined by the current Commission for Europe,“ introduced Gerald Renner. **It is designed to tackle the biggest challenge of the day, which is not the coronavirus crisis, but climate change. But it will guide all post-Covid recovery plans, with the billions of euros that will be spent on EU recovery. It is probably the biggest horizontal policy initiative ever taken at EU level. It will affect every aspect of our lives: the food we eat, the products we buy and the way we communicate with consumers. And it will also generate hundreds of political and legislative initiatives, which will have a strong impact on our cosmetics regulation.”*

• Increasing Europe’s climate ambitions for 2030 and 2050
• Ensuring clean, affordable and secure energy resources
• Mobilising industry for a clean, circular economy
• Building and renovating in an energy and resource-efficient manner
• Supporting the ambition of “Zero pollution” for an environment free of toxic substances
• Preserving and restoring ecosystems and biodiversity
• Building a fair, healthy and environmentally friendly food system “from farm to fork”
