Prospects for organic cosmetics by 2025

Prospectives pour les cosmétiques bio à l'horizon 2025

What factors may influence the future of the organic cosmetics sector? What threats could it face? In order to give the sector’s professionals the keys to their future, the Cluster Bio Auvergne Rhône-Alpes has been working since 2014 on a prospective study including all the dimensions of the organic market. Nicolas Bertrand, from Cosmebio, Lauriane Lubert and Caroline Girard, from the Cluster Bio presented its latest updates during the Natexpo trade show, which was held from 24 to 26 October 2021.

To begin their speech, the two representatives of the Cluster Bio wanted to recall the framework that draws the future of organic cosmetics.

Macro-environmental factors

Ecology
Ecology is becoming increasingly embedded in our society, and is impacting all its aspects (public services, education, urban planning, travel, consumption, etc.). The movement is also reflected in the political sphere, following the example of the “green wave” that marked the last French municipal elections, or the European Green Deal, one of whose objectives is “zero greenhouse gas emissions” by 2050.

Legislation
Legislators are following suit, for example in France with the Anti-Waste for a Circular Economy Lawt (AGEC Law). The programme includes the end of single-use plastic packaging by 2040 and the promotion of bulk packaging.
At the same time, the French government has launched the Impact platform to teach companies about extra-financial reporting, including CSR, an injunction that applies not only to large groups but also to SMEs.

Economy
According to the Banque de France, annual GDP growth, which was -8.7% in 2020, should be +7.4% in 2021 and should be stable at 3% in 2022.
