The Chinese market: key figures and trends

To export to China: this is a dream for more than one cosmetics producer! A dream not that easy to make as real, as the Chinese market is known to be complex and difficult … though its potential is huge! To know it well is the key for success: this is what said, again and again, the speakers during the 3rd International Meetings that the French Cosmed had dedicated to China. Prior to going forward, some points of reference are needed.

One billion and three hundred millions Chinese people … and I, a small French cosmetics manufacturer. The excessiveness of the issue is not a cause for fear, after the specialists gathered for this day; this impressive market is, nevertheless, accessible even to SMEs. On the condition, all they add, to know where to set foot in.
The first speaker, David Gerard, an Associate Director of Altios International , a company specialized in advice and operational support of companies in the world markets, set a picture of this market.

The cosmetics in China

The Chinese market is the fourth market throughout the world, and the second in Asia, behind Japan. With a yearly 15% increase rate (when the world market is painfully growing at a 1.4% pace), it is valued at circa € 13.5 billion.

Obviously, this market is not supplied only by imports. China is also a major producer of cosmetics: in fact, it is the number 3 in the world, behind the USA and Japan.
David Gerard said that, in 2011, there were some 3,400 Chinese companies specialized in cosmetics and with a manufacturing license. Among them, Shangai Jahwa, the owner of the Herborist brand, Beijing Dabao, Longliqi Cosmetics …
