On 28 August 2024, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) announced that France had submitted a proposal for harmonised classification and labelling of Hexamethylindanopyran as a category 1B toxic for reproduction substance.
1,3,4,6,7,8-Hexahydro-4,6,6,7,8,8-hexamethylcyclopenta-γ-2-benzopyran (CAS No.1222-05-5; EC No.214-946-9; INCI: Hexamethylindanopyran) is an ingredient listed in the Cosing, with the functions: Fragrance, Perfuming.
It has been added in Annex III/336 of the European Regulation 1223/2009 by Regulation 2023/1545 on “new” allergens, to make it subject to compulsory labelling as soon as its concentration exceeds 0.001% in leave-on products and 0.01% in rinse-off products.
It is also listed in Annex VI/603-212-00-7 of European CLP Regulation 1272/2008, with the following classifications:
• Aquatic Acute 1, H400 - Very toxic to aquatic life.
• Aquatic Chronic 1, H410 - Very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects.
France, which is assessing the substance as part of CoRAP, is proposing to add the following classification:
• Repr. 1B, H360Df - May damage the unborn child. Suspected of damaging fertility.
If the process is completed and this classification becomes effective, Hexamethylindanopyran could be listed as a CMR and its use banned in cosmetic products in Europe, unless an assessment by the SCCS considers it safe for cosmetic use.
