With the anxiety-inducing context of the pandemic and the ever-growing desire to get back to nature, we have seen an explosion in the supply of various consumer products containing hemp derivatives. What are the expected properties? What does French and European law say about cosmetic products containing cannabis derivatives? What do you need to know before developing cosmetic products based on hemp derivatives? Estelle Dehier, from Labosphere, explains.

A bit of history

It is not easy to trace the geographical origin of hemp. But we do know that its use dates back to prehistoric times.
Today, it is scientifically proven that cannabis originated in Tibet. Hemp then spread to Russia, Europe and China. France is now the leading producer in Europe and could become the world leader.
And it is also a trendy ingredient for cosmetics!

What are the claimed properties of cannabis derivatives?

Before delving into cosmetic products, it is interesting to take a look at the sectors offering products containing hemp derivatives and to take stock of the expected properties.

Food
In the form of sweets, capsules or infusions, the relaxing and pain-relieving effects (thanks to cannabidiol) are sought after.
Hemp seeds, butter and oil are also used for their high omega-3 content.

CBD E-liquid
It is an aqueous extract intended for vaping, containing CBD extracts. Its use would help relieve various symptoms related to anxiety: nausea, insomnia, pain, acne, etc., among others. This method of consumption would allow for better bioavailability, and therefore better effectiveness than other methods.
