The climate crisis is everyone’s business… and yet the general public in France believes it is already doing all it can at its own level to curb the problem. According to figures from the “Earth Day” study, carried out by polling firm Ipsos, consumers say that businesses and the state are the ones who most need to roll up their sleeves to respond to the environmental emergency.
The fourth edition of the Earth Day survey was conducted between January 26 and February 9, 2024.
A panel of 24,000 people (living in 33 different countries) was interviewed.
Here are the results for the French sample.
A question of responsibility
“For the French, politicians play a major role in this fight. At a time when companies are also being blamed for their climate inaction, 65% of French people also agree with the idea that if they don’t act, they would be failing in their duty towards both their employees and the general public,” comments Ipsos.
And where do consumers stand in all this? 67% of respondents believe that the impact would be significant if everyone initiated changes in their everyday uses and practices.
But in reality, it’s not quite the same tune. 21% of those surveyed think that there’s no point in changing their behavior, as it wouldn’t make any difference.
Worse still, 26% of panellists said that “global warming is simply ‘out of their control’ and that it’s ‘already too late’ to take the necessary action to remedy the situation.”
