Every year, GreenFlex and ADEME produce a barometer of responsible consumption. The 2024 edition shows that the environmental and health crises have heightened French awareness. Some 70% now recognize the direct link between their lifestyles and the future of the Earth.
The survey was conducted between February 28 and March 5, 2024. 1006 people were interviewed.
Respondents are increasingly well-informed. “In 2024, the French are participating more in Internet petitions to denounce companies or brands disrespectful of the planet, human rights or consumer health. Indeed, 28% of them claim to sign such petitions systematically or regularly, compared with just 10% in 2017, testifying to a multiplication of commitments in favor of environmental and social justice,” explains GreenFlex.
Panelists aren’t just expressing indignation online, they’re taking concrete action. They are taking responsibility for changing their consumption habits. 65% of French people say they are switching to retailers who share their values.
It’s time for accountability
Citizens believe that companies have a role to play in tackling the environmental crisis. “The majority of French people want manufacturers to review their business model in depth,” says GreenFlex. “Beyond this expectation, the French would like to be supported by the State, which should play a more coercive role: 82% of consumers believe that the government should force companies to produce in a way that respects the environment and workers.”
