Perfume: a product named desire

Perfume doesn’t just help you smell good. It also has an impact on mood and psyche. For many consumers, it’s synonymous with pleasure. In its latest study, trends consultancy The Benchmarking Company questioned a panel of Americans to better understand their relationship with this product.

The survey was carried out in November among 4177 people living in the United States.

First findings

When it comes to buying any cosmetics, 90% of respondents explain that fragrance is a criterion for choice.
In fact, 84% would give up on a product, even if it was adapted to their needs, if the fragrance didn’t suit them.

For them, scented products are important because they:
• Influence their mood (69%)
• Contribute to a sense of self-care (55%) • Arouse positive emotions during use (55%)

Diving into the psyche

99% of those surveyed believe that fragrance can influence mood. 96% of those surveyed recognize that the product can evoke memories or strong emotional bonds. Consumers are looking for scents that evoke certain emotions, nostalgia or fundamental memories, such as:
• A happy period in their lives (70%)
• A memory of a family member or loved one (55%)
• A specific season (49%)
• A vacation destination (41%)

To each his own perfume

To smell good, American women use:
• Bath products (97%)
• Body creams/lotions (93%)
• Scented hair care products (87%)
They want products with fragrance that lasts all day.
