Sleeping Beauty... and her skin care!

A good night’s sleep contributes to healthy skin. So more and more brands are entering the “beauty sleep” segment, offering specific products to be applied just before going to bed, for an even more rested look when you wake up. At the in-cosmetics trade show (held in Paris from April 16 to 18, 2024), Amanda Lim, journalist for Cosmetic Design-Asia, took a look back at this trend.

“The skin needs sleep,” explains Amanda Lim. “When we sleep, our cells renew themselves.”
And when the body doesn’t get its quota of rest, the epidermis suffers the consequences. “It is less hydrated, and loses suppleness and elasticity. It also has an impact on collagen production. What’s more, the visible signs of skin ageing increase.”

What’s the point of sleeping?

According to the journalist, today’s consumers tend to be night owls… which isn’t necessarily good news.
“The years 2000-2010 were marked by the YOLO period,” comments Amanda Lim. “Millennials, who were in their twenties at the time, thought they could do anything and claimed on their social networks that they would ‘rest when they died’.” In addition to their youthful ardor, these individuals began to adopt new habits, such as the intensive use of their smartphones just before bedtime.
“These same Millenials are now between 30 and 40 years old and have accumulated a heavy sleep debt. Many of them suffer from insomnia.”

In France, for example, 33% of citizens get 7 hours’ rest a night. But 45% say they need at least 9 hours to be in top form… the figures are not good!
