Stunning rise in lipstick sales

Hausse spectaculaire des ventes de rouges à lèvres

According to The NPD Group, sales of premium lipsticks in France rose by 35% in the week of 14 March 2022, which followed the end of the mask requirement. Over the same period, total sales of beauty products in the selective perfumery channel were up 3%.

This spectacular increase from the previous week demonstrates the impact of the end of the mask requirement on consumer buying habits, The NPD Group analyses.
In fact, in one week, total sales of selective make-up increased by 8% and those of the lip segment by 30%. Lip make-up is thus the leading contributor to the growth of overall make-up sales during this period, driven by lipstick sales, which rose by 35% compared to the previous week.
“The end of restrictions on wearing masks has literally boosted lip make-up,” comments Mathilde Lion, Beauty Expert Europe at The NPD Group. “Indeed, many consumers have celebrated this newfound freedom by buying a new lipstick. This is great news for the make-up brands that were particularly hard hit by the pandemic.”
