What is the outlook for e-commerce in 2023?

Inflation, rise of second hand, new technologies… e-commerce is facing many challenges. And to better understand the challenges of online distribution and how professionals are preparing for it, Fevad (Federation of e-commerce and distance selling) has commissioned OpinionWay to conduct a study.

The OpinionWay consultation for the Fevad “the morale of e-merchants and the 2023 economic situation” was carried out online. 106 managers of Internet sales sites (all sectors combined) were interviewed between January 26 and February 22, 2023.

Despite a troubled economic context, the panelists are rather optimistic (39%) for the current year.
 61% of them foresee an increase in their turnover.
However, 89% believe that the second-hand market will intensify in 2023 and 60% fear that some e-commerce sites will close.

Priority investments

Respondents indicated in which sectors they wish to concentrate in order to ensure the sustainability of their business.
We find in order:
• CSR (52%),
• IT (51%),
• international sales (39%),
• logistics (32%),
• innovation (29%),
• customer relations (27%),
• human resources (26%).

New technologies

According to the respondents, artificial intelligence (90%), virtual reality (58%) and Blockchain systems can be promising and of interest for the development of their activities.
On the other hand, the Metaverse does not at all seem to them to be a technology of the future for their profession (60%).

The survey shed light on the phenomena that concern the managers of e-commerce sites.
