International news: Australia bans cosmetics testing on animals

Actualités à l'international : l'Australie interdit les essais de cosmétiques sur les animaux

As part of its partnership with CosmeticOBS, Business France announces that the Australian government has officially banned animal testing for the cosmetics industry since 1 July 2020. These new legal provisions are in line with the European Union’s approach. The government also supports the development of modern alternative methods that do not use animals.

The ban on animal testing data applies in all circumstances. There are exceptions to these restrictions for particular types of new animal test data, which are necessary to continue to protect human health and the environment, and to align as far as possible with international restrictions.
These three exceptions are described in the rules on industrial chemicals. They apply when animal data :
• Shows that the chemical has a hazard characteristic and this conflicts with the non-animal test data • Is the only information that can demonstrate whether or not the chemical has a particular environment hazard characteristic • Is from tests conducted on a different industrial chemical, and that different chemical is not introducing for an end use in cosmetics
