As every year, at the close of the Cosmetic Valley’s 22nd Congress on Regulatory Issues - Fragrance & Cosmetics, held on 20 and 21 November 2024, the FEBEA team answered questions prepared by delegates during the two days of conferences. The first part of the session focuses on claims.

Label “Reef-friendly”

Question
Are there any validated labels for the “reef-friendly” claim for sunscreen products? Today, we use it on the basis of validation by a lab on documents. Will this still be OK in the coming months?
Answer from Xavier Guéant
Whether it’s a label or a claim, here we’re dealing with a claim that can be considered global and misleading. And should therefore be avoided. Because friendly ultimately refers to a complete absence of impact, or even a positive impact, in this case on the seabed. The idea of a label will not necessarily solve the problem from the point of view of the Green Claims Directive. On the other hand, the idea of a label for solar panels could be an avenue worth exploring. It’s not necessarily the only one, but it could be a way of improving efficiency compared with the delegated act, which will take longer.
