Sun protection: what are the habits of the French?

For many of us, the summer months are synonymous with sunbathing. Appinio, a research institute, has taken an interest in how consumers protect their skin when out in the sun.

This study was carried out in France in July 2024 among 1,000 respondents aged between 18 and 65.

Every year, the health authorities remind people of the importance of applying sun cream. The message seems to have been well received, with 70% of those surveyed saying they wear sunscreen. However, 62% use it only when on holiday. “They don’t see the need to protect their skin when there is no direct sun: 39% say they don’t use any protection when there is no sun,” comments Appinio.

To protect themselves from the dangers of the sun, they also wear hats (50%), put themselves under a parasol (44%) or wear anti-UV glasses (31%).

In terms of formulations, the French have their own preferences. “The majority opt for protection in the form of cream (74%) or spray (56%),” explains Appinio. “They are less keen on oils (19%),”

Private individuals are also increasingly vigilant. 65% of them say they use SPF 50 and do not expose themselves to the sun at peak hours.

Despite these good results, the Appinio study shows that the French could be more vigilant.
