On 7 December 2023, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) published Germany’s intention of an harmonised classification and labelling (CLH) for Trifluoroacetic Acid, a pH adjuster that can be used in cosmetics.
Trifluoroacetic acid (CAS No.: 76-05-1, EC No.: 200-929-3, INCI: Trifluoroacetic Acid) is an ingredient listed in the Cosing, with the function: pH adjuster.
It is not currently regulated by European Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009. It is listed in Annex VI/607-091-00-1 of European CLP Regulation 1272/2008, with the following classifications:
• Acute Tox. 4*, H332 - Harmful if inhaled
• Skin Corr. 1A, H314 - Causes severe skin burns and eye damage
• Aquatic Chronic 3, H412 - Harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects
Germany intends to propose the following classifications:
• Acute Tox. 3, H331 - Toxic if inhaled
• Reproductive toxicity
