Is sustainability important to the French?

Everyone says it: the fight against global warming is vital. But do consumers really care about environmental criteria when making their purchases? This is precisely the question answered by the OpinionWay survey on Ulule.

To carry out the survey, 1,049 French people were questioned between September 6 and 8, 2023.

Today, 50% of panellists explain that they are more sensitive to actions implemented by companies in favor of the environment. “A position more shared by 18-24 year-olds and CSP+,” adds OpinionWay.
What’s more, 61% of French people say they often take certain environmental factors into account before making a purchase.
Nevertheless, 20% never pay attention to such factors. The main reason given by respondents is price. According to them, nature-conscious or ethical brands sell products that are too expensive. “Lack of information and lack of interest in these criteria are also cited as reasons.”

Price remains the main factor that triggers a purchase (72%). This is followed by quality (61%), composition (52%) and place of production (49%).
The product’s environmental-friendliness (40%), the presence of a label (35%) and the brand’s CSR commitments (30%) are criteria that come last on the list.

The role of SMEs
