Sustainability: a key issue for retailers

The beauty industry is switching to the green side of the force. Suppliers (of ingredients or packaging) and brands are redoubling their efforts to limit their impact on the planet and offer ever more virtuous solutions. But what about retailers in this race for sustainability? At the Sustainable Cosmetic Summit (held in Paris from 23 to 25 October 2024), Katarzyna Wisniewska, Sephora’s CSR Director, presented her company’s eco-responsible strategy.

Sephora is a real heavyweight in cosmetics retailing. The company is present in 34 countries with 3,000 points of sale, carries over 500 brands and employs nearly 52,000 people. With such a powerful presence, the chain is necessarily concerned about the impact of its activity on the planet.

“Sephora has been committed to respecting the environment since 2009,” says Katarzyna Wisniewska. ’We began to tackle the recycling of empty containers and delivery by electric vehicle. Over the years, we have rolled out various programmes around the world,“

Objectives achieved…

Today, Sephora can boast some of the results achieved thanks to its sustainable policy.
85% of the electricity used comes from renewable energy and 56% of shops have a take-back system for empty beauty product containers.
The company has also managed to reduce its carbon emissions by 55%.

The Group aims to reduce the amount of virgin plastic, cardboard and waste used and generated, as well as helping consumers and brands to recycle the products they sell.
