Microbiota and skin care: Givaudan's strategies

Whether it is a question of protecting it, balancing it or even using it to create cosmetic care products and respond to skin problems, such as skin sensitivity or the consequences of sebum overproduction (all the more topical given the fact that masks are worn in times of a viral pandemic), the microbiota is at the centre of attention for suppliers of cosmetic ingredients. During an E-Academy, Catherine Zanchetta, NGS (Next Generation Sequencing) specialist, explained Givaudan’s approach in this area, with three examples of approaches and active ingredients.

Coronaviruses are on everyone’s mind today, and there is growing awareness of the impact that the current pandemic is having on the mindset of consumers, but also on the health of their skin.
In order to better understand these issues and their relationship to the understanding of the skin microbiota, Givaudan conducted a survey of more than 3000 consumers in December 2020. Catherine Zanchetta revealed the findings.

A heavy wave of germophobia

The first objective of this survey was to measure consumer concerns about the skin microbiota. And they are very present, since in 2020, in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, 27% of the population indicated that they were afraid of it, compared with only 8% in 2018.
“it means that consumers might have made links between this virus, this microorganism and the microorganisms that we usually have on our on our skin,” commented Catherine Zanchetta.

Surf on the wave

“Our industry must face this new perception,” she continued. “But actually, we will do better than that. We will surf on it.”
