Ecology: the French are as pessimistic as ever

Écologie : les Français toujours aussi pessimistes

Faced with the current anxiety-inducing climate, do the French have confidence in the future? To answer this question and gauge the state of the population, Asterès asked the IFOP polling institute to carry out a small barometer. Unsurprisingly, citizens say they are worried about the future.

The survey was conducted among 1,000 people (aged 18 and over). Interviews were conducted between November 2 and 3, 2023.

French people’s level of optimism is much lower than their level of pessimism (26° versus 74°).
85% of those questioned consider the future to be worrying.38% believe that in the next 50 years, the environmental issue will be central for everyone.

Present and grey future

Far from wanting to rejoice, the French believe that the current period is synonymous with regression. And for them, the days ahead are no rosier, since they believe this phenomenon will continue.

When it comes to the environmental crisis, for example, they think that changing our behavior won’t be enough to stem the tide. For 56% of them, the fight against climate change will only be effective with the development of new technological solutions.

And to underline their pessimism, 67% say that France is pursuing a policy that is not very (or not at all) effective in tackling this crisis…

“These results highlight the growing concern and critical outlook of the French population with regard to future challenges, particularly in terms of climate change and environmental policy,” concludes IFOP.
