High-end sun products: strong sales growth

According to The NPD Group, sales of premium suncare products in France have increased by 63% in the first five months of 2022 (January to end of May). Spectacular compared to the same period in 2021, this increase reveals that suncare products are becoming increasingly important in the selective beauty market.

Although representing a small segment of the premium skincare market (€8.2m YTD to May 2022 and 4% of total sales), suncare products have significantly outperformed the overall market in the first five months of the year.
All sub-segments of suncare products also performed very well. Sales of after-sun products doubled in the first five months of 2022 compared to the same period last year. In the suncare category, sales of body products jumped by 91% and those of face products by 58%. At the same time, sales of self-tanners increased by 49% between January and the end of May, compared to the same period in 2021.

High SPF leads the way

Growth was driven by high SPF products, reflecting consumers’ desire to protect their skin from the ageing effects of the sun.
Within sun protection, body products with SPF 50 grew by 117% in the first five months of the year, compared to the same period last year. The gain in market share is five points: their total sales have increased from 33% between January and May 2021 to 38% of total body protection during the same period this year.
