Valérie Rager-Brossard based her presentation on a survey conducted in France between 28 June and 12 July 2024 among 1,000 respondents aged between 18 and 65, representative of the French population in terms of age, gender, socio-professional category and region.
Initial findings
A very large majority (76%) of French people say they like to be tanned.
Nevertheless, they intend to adopt sensible behaviour, and sun protection is, for 70%, the first thing they use to protect themselves from the sun.
Seasonality
Sun protection has its own specific rhythms and the French use it:
• on holiday or in summer for 62%,
• all year round for 28% (19% whenever there’s sun, 9% whatever the weather),
• never or rarely for 10%.
Women (30%) are more likely than men (26%) to include sun protection in their daily skincare routine.
And it is the youngest age group who use sun protection most regularly (with this behaviour decreasing steadily with age):
• 38% of 18-24 year-olds
• 31% of 25-34 year-olds
• 30% in the 35-44 age group
• 27% in the 45-54 age group
• 19% in the 55-65 age group.
