At the start of this year, the YouGov polling institute looked at the cosmetic expectations of French consumers. According to the consultancy, the beauty industry is in good spirits, as the general public has no intention of cutting its “skincare” budget and has every intention of looking after itself.
The survey was carried out between 13 September and 1 October 2024. 780 French people living throughout the country were interviewed.
First figures
Despite the continuing difficult economic climate, 68% of respondents intend to spend the same on beauty products as they did last year. 30% of generation Z even intend to spend more.
Among the products that respondents use most often are day cream (56%), face wash (49%), sun cream (34%) and night cream (32%).
These products are among the favourites of consumers of all ages.
Motivations for use
French people buy cosmetics because they want to:
• Protect their skin (40%)
• Feel good (27%)
• Fight the signs of ageing (26%)
• Make their skin “comfortable” (24%)
• Improve the condition of their skin (22%)
• Make themselves feel good (20%)
• Give gifts to loved ones (9%)
“38% of Generation Z say they buy skincare products to please themselves, compared with 20% of all respondents. These consumers are also the ones who use the most sun protection,” explains YouGov. “Older respondents are significantly more likely to buy moisturising and anti-ageing skincare products.”
