AshleyMadison identifies itself as "the world first platform underlying the concept of extramarital relationship". Established in 2002 in Canada, the site claims to have nowadays more than 16 million users the world over; it provides "all the married people who wish to have a discreet affair outside marriage a 100% confidential, secured and anonymous alternative".

Its online survey has been performed from 9 to 16 November 2012, in 24 countries, with 25- to 55-year old 25,470 female respondents.
