Chinese consumers prefer cosmetics from abroad

A study by the Diagonal Reports organization, specialized in market studies, reports that, for their cosmetics, Chinese consumers do not trust the “Made in China," and prefer imported products. Luxury brands, and a Parisian signature, drive the beauty-addicts of the Empire of the Middle … if the products meet their needs.

The Chinese beauty market, thanks to its hundreds of millions of male and female consumers, is one of the largest in the world. Obviously, China draws the attention of exporters, though, as per Diagonal Reports, the behaviour of cosmetics consumers is still poorly known. Therefore, the topic of its study was “how to understand the Chinese beauty market to finger out the opportunities it gives the industry.”

The "Made in" mention, and its importance

First information: the origin of the product is of the utmost importance. Chinese consumers do not trust the “Made in China," especially when considering quality and safety. They have serious concerns about the potential undesirable effects on their skins that the local products could have.

Imported cosmetics are seen are being of higher quality and safer.
Further, this is true even for a multinational company that manufactures products with the same brand in China and abroad: consumers are more confident in the products manufactured outside their country.

Among the most looked-after cosmetics: those coming from Asia and Europe. France is even better considered, with the Paris historical status as the center of culture and elegance, especially in the fashion and beauty worlds.
