Cosmetics: the international popularity of Made in France

Cosmétiques : la popularité du Made in France à l'international

While France is renowned abroad for its gastronomy, heritage and monuments, it is also renowned for its expertise. A recent OpinionWay survey for CCI France highlighted the fact that French cosmetics have particularly good press in other countries around the world.

Several samples were drawn up for the survey (1,007 Germans, 1,032 Chinese, 1,003 Americans and 1,041 Italians). The interviews were conducted between 10 and 16 October 2024.

Main findings

Generally speaking, over 60% of respondents believe that products made in France are high-quality, luxurious and expensive.
On the other hand, for them, French manufacturing is not necessarily synonymous with innovation (23%) or eco-responsibility (33%).
For 72% of Germans, 70% of Italians, 61% of Americans and 41% of Chinese, cosmetics are emblematic of French know-how.
The European panellists even put this category at the top of their ranking, ahead of wines and spirits.

The majority of those surveyed said they had already consumed French products (over 90% overall). 38% of Chinese respondents even said they use French products very often. 49% of Germans, 33% of Chinese, 37% of Americans and 54% of Italians said they had already tried beauty products made in France.

The reasons why panellists use French products are:
• Its superior quality (46%)
• Its reputation and prestige (36%)
• Its uniqueness (30%)
• Its affordable prices (12%)

And this trend is not about to stop. The majority of those questioned believe that French products enjoy good visibility …
