Post-Covid: how is the organic market performing?

As every year, Cosmébio presents the state of the organic and natural cosmetics market at its annual press conference. The results for the beginning of the year 2020 were collected during the month of September. Figures that are necessarily linked to the economic and health crisis that the country (and the whole world) is currently going through.

The first lesson is that the organic market grew by 11% and achieved a turnover of more than 900 million euros in 2019.
“Between 2016 and 2020, the number of cosmetics buyers increased by 61%, which is not a negligible result. Indeed, this year, one out of two French people bought a natural or organic product,” explains Nicolas Bertrand, Director of Cosmébio.

Who are these consumers?

Although there is no typical profile, we know that women acquire more organic skincare products than men.
However, the male share continues to grow every year.
Users of this branch of the cosmetics industry also turn to ethical and natural brands when it comes to food and clothing. Moreover, 37% of recent consumers explain that they made their first purchase in supermarkets. This is in fact the most important place of conversion after specialty stores and the selective channel.

The budget allocated to the organic beauty segment is increasing.
While in 2016 45% of consumers declared spending more, they are 52% in 2020.

Among the products most often purchased, we find in top position :
• Facial care
• Hair care
• Body care
• Hygiene products (toothpaste, shower gel, soaps, etc.)
