Olfactory and gustatory receptors: the link with the skin

Récepteurs olfactifs et gustatifs : le lien avec la peau

Institut Scientis was present at the last Symposium of the French Society of Cosmetology on 6 and 7 December 2022 and offers a summary of these days. This year, the research work presented as well as the presentations on industrial applications focused on the theme of “Skin and receptors”, sensory receptors being cells that allow the transformation of external stimuli into nervous information, at the origin of the body’s reactions.

On this subject, several speakers presented work on new ingredients, mostly of plant origin, capable of helping to regulate certain skin problems (anti-ageing, relief of irritation, fight against inflammation, anti-pollution, etc.) by acting on skin receptors. More generally, it is a question of restricting oxidative stress, an imbalance between the production of free radicals (harmful to the body if present in excessive quantities) and the quantity of antioxidants, capable of neutralising them, available and usable by the body.

By the way, did you know that some of our olfactory and gustatory receptors are found expressed elsewhere than in these obvious organs, particularly in the skin?

From 2015 to 2017, several articles, which have become references on this subject, were published by a German team, in particular the first one to show that two bitter taste receptors were functional and expressed in human keratinocytes (majority cells of the epidermis synthesizing keratin to ensure skin impermeability and protection), according to the stimuli tested and presented in the study: Wölfle U, Elsholz FA, Kersten A, Haarhaus B, Müller WE, Schempp CM. Expression and functional activity of the bitter taste receptors TAS2R1 and TAS2R38 in human keratinocytes. Skin Pharmacol Physiol. 2015;28(3):137-46. doi: 10.1159/000367631. Epub …
