On the proper use of sunscreen products by the French ANSM

Here and there we hear the sound of some controversies about the real effectiveness of sun protection products, the relevance of the SPF indices displayed on the labels, the potential toxicity of the filters and screens used in their formulas… The fact remains that choosing the best product is not enough, it must also be used correctly so that it can fulfil its function satisfactorily. This is what the ANSM reminds us in the “Recommendations” published on its website. Nothing new, but advice that is worth remembering.

And to give “some advice on how to choose and use sun protection products properly, and thus enjoy the sun in complete safety”.

Basic caution

The Agency reminds us that solar radiation is made up of a group of light rays including ultraviolet B (UVB), A (UVA) and C (UVC). UVC rays are largely absorbed as soon as they reach the atmosphere. However, UVB and UVA rays reach us and penetrate the surface layer of the skin (the epidermis), causing sunburn, as well as the deeper layer (the dermis), which can accelerate the ageing of the skin and cause skin cancers.

The ANSM then indicates what sun protection products are: cosmetics intended to be applied to the skin to protect it from ultraviolet radiation by absorbing and/or reflecting this radiation. They can be presented in different forms: cream, oil, stick, gel or milk…
