The organic cosmetics market by 2025

Despite a slowdown in growth, the organic market still arouses the interest of professionals and consumers. What will its future be like in 10 years? Which strategic choices should be made to give it more value? The results of a prospective study taking into account all the dimensions of the organic market were unveiled at the 3rd edition of the B.I.O. N’Days organised by Organics Cluster in 2014. Here is a review.

This study was conducted with Futuribles, an independent study centre and think tank focusing on the present-day world, and initiated by the Organics Cluster association, a network of organic companies in the French region of Rhône-Alpes. Forty national and international experts with different profiles (economists, sociologists, producers, transformers, distributors, researchers, formulators…) from the sector of organic products gathered for three meetings over the last five months to try and foresee the future of the organic markets in the food and cosmetics industries. They worked on the analysis of variables, micro-scenarios and scenarios to define both possible levers of development and the great challenges to come for the sector.

As for the cosmetics industry, the prospective study brought out four possible scenarios.

Scenario 1: a divided organic cosmetics market

In 2025, the organic cosmetics market will be fragmented, and will struggle to structure itself. It will be represented by dynamic and innovative VSEs and SMEs, and strongly challenged by large conventional cosmetics companies. The increasing number of private initiatives, the complexity of claims, the confusion between the various labels, and the lack of mass-marketing will not enable the segment to smoothly emerge.
