Business France’s Team France Export aims to support all manufacturers in taking the first step towards international expansion. As in all sectors, some countries are more promising than others. In the case of cosmetics, Canada appears to be a market of interest. Here is everything you need to know about the area before considering to deploy your activity there.

The Canadian cosmetics market is worth $7.9 billion. It is expected to reach $8.2 billion by 2022.
Canadians spend an average of €938 per year on their beauty and hygiene products.

Trends
Makeup, deodorants, hair products and sun care have been particularly affected by the health crisis. On the other hand, skin care, hand care, hair care and fragrances performed well.

Covid-19 has had a strong impact on e-commerce. Retailers have invested heavily to provide a better online experience for their consumers. More and more minute delivery services are also emerging.

Market characteristics
According to Business France, the Canadian cosmetics market is dominated by large international groups.
They include:
• L’Oréal (15.1% market share)
• Procter & Gamble (14.9% market share)
• Coty (5.4% market share)
• Estée Lauder (4.3% market share)
• Unilever (4.1% market share)
• Johnson & Johnson (3.7% market share)

Nevertheless, local players are well established. “Drugstore/parapharmacy chains are also allocating more space to Canadian niche brands, seeing them as a new growth engine (healthy ingredients, sustainable manufacturing).”
