Rising fuel prices, increasing food costs, school supplies, energy in general, no sector is spared the repercussions of the health, political and economic context. For the cosmetics industry, the soaring cost of packaging and the shortage of certain raw materials is a daily stress and no one knows when it will end. Many companies in the cosmetics sector are currently facing an unprecedented situation when ordering raw materials.
Some suppliers cannot guarantee a price for more than 24 hours, or simply cannot announce a price any more! The goods have to be ordered and the price is only given when they are sent… The other big problem is the tension over raw materials. How can we ensure the manufacture of products already on the market if the raw material is out of stock? The tension on supply affects several categories: esters, silicas, emulsifiers… Some of these functional ingredients have been stopped immediately.
Active ingredients seem to be less affected by the shortage for the moment.
In order to deal with these problems, the various representative bodies in the food and cosmetics industry, as well as the public authorities, wanted to put in place emergency measures to allow the industry to continue to manufacture consumer products.
A derogation system has therefore been set up (see the article on this point) for the substitution of certain raw materials in formulas. This system, subject to conditions, currently only concerns vegetable oils. However, it could soon be extended to vegetable oil derivatives.
