Exploring the impact of pollution on skin at in-cosmetics Asia

A new 'Spotlight On Anti-Pollution' feature at in-cosmetics Asia to examine ‘anti-pollution’ products and showcase the latest ground-breaking ingredients redressing the issue. The largest event of its kind for the Asia Pacific region, in-cosmetics Asia will take place in Bangkok, Thailand, from 8 to 10 November 2016.

Pollution protection is big news in the beauty industry. 79% of all global skincare product launched in Q1 2016 carried an anti-pollution claim, according to Mintel, with brands in a number of other beauty categories, such as colour cosmetics and haircare, beginning to adapt their formulations.

Asia, in particular, is suffering at the hands of the environment, with air pollution hitting critical levels in many major cities. Besides contributing to premature death, ground level ozone pollution, particulate matter, traffic fumes, UV rays and smog are also skin aggressors that accelerate ageing, wrinkles and dull complexions. As a result, face masks are almost a necessity, and beauty brands are strengthening the protection function of their products to target specific consumer needs in the region.

Earlier this month, China hosted the G20 Summit that focused on the causes and effects of pollution. The event saw the nation formally join the Paris Agreement on climate change, along with the US – the world’s two largest economies. This announcement paves the way for greater change in the future. But for now, from a cosmetics perspective, the focus remains on how to manufacture products to help offset the effects of poor air quality.
