23 March 2009 This day of meetings was mainly an opportunity for cosmetics professionals to learn about the latest regulatory or technical information affecting the manufacture or distribution of their products. Health Authorities ( Afssaps DGCCRF), experts and specialists presented the latest orientations of their work and brought new elements to the work in progress. Catherine Desmares, Director of the advertising, cosmetics and biocides evaluation department at Afssaps, gave an update on the evaluation of the few ingredients currently in the spotlight.
Alcohol and Aluminium: to be continued…
An evaluation of the possible toxicity to the body of the alcohol (ethanol), by the dermal route and at low doses, was ongoing in 2008. The Afssaps experts concluded that this compound did not pose any particular safety problem, provided that the cosmetic containing it is applied to healthy skin. Safety margins appear satisfactory, except for oral care products and products for children under 3 years of age. To see if these conclusions will be followed by recommendations for the use of alcohol in these cosmetics… A study on the transcutaneous passage of aluminium salts was also conducted, their toxic potential being strongly suspected for certain organs (notably the brain).
