Triman: a new logo on French packaging

Mandatory as of 2015, the Triman logo will be applicable to cosmetics products packaging, too. It will show the consumers recyclable packaging subject to sorting instructions. What are its main points, and its timetable for application? Penalties and confines for the industry? Answers and examples have been provided by Virginie d’Enfert, the Manager of Economical, Environmental and International Affairs in the French FEBEA, during the meeting for information “Les emballages Cosmétiques“ (Cosmetics packaging), organized by the Federation on 17 June 2013.

Orders after two laws: "Grenelle I" and "Grenelle II"

The so-called “Grenelle II” law, or law number 2010-788, issued on 12 July 2012, for a national commitment to the environment, states that “ no later than 1 January 2012, any recyclable product subject to measures of augmented accountability of the producers are subject to a common signage, which informs the consumer that this product is subject to sorting instructions" ( Article 199 ) .
The application of this article was subject to a draft for an order , submitted for public consultation from 20 November to 6 December 2012.  Currently reviewed in the Commission for simplified procedures, it is, then, to be endorsed by the State Council. Its release is planned for this summer, for an implementation on 1 January 2015.

General outlines

The Triman logo shall be applied on all the recyclable packaging or recyclable parts of packaging, subject to sorting instructions. Examples: holders and cardboard, spray cans, glass bottles, plastic bottles and jars, as well as their caps and lids …
No logo is to be applied on non recyclable packaging or parts thereof. Examples: plastic containers, except if made of Polyethylene Terephtalate (PET) or High-Density …
