As part of its All program (an international project to better understand the impact of skin diseases), Laboratoires Pierre Fabre has focused on acne. The company has just announced the publication of its study on the epidemiology of this condition in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. It confirms that this pathology affects more women, adolescents and young people.
The All survey was conducted in 2023. To carry it out, the testimonies of 50,000 people (representative of the adult population of 20 countries and spread over five continents) were collected.
Results
Acne affects one person in five (20.5% of the world’s population).
The demographic groups most affected are 16-24 year-olds (28.3%) and 25-39 year-olds (19.3%). “Generally speaking, women (23.6%) suffer more than men (17.5%),” adds Laboratoires Pierre Fabre.
There are also disparities according to geographical area. “The highest prevalence of acne was recorded in Latin America (23.9%), East Asia (20.2%), Africa (18.5%) and the Middle East (16.1%), while the lowest prevalence was observed in Europe (9.7%) and Australia (10.8%). The high percentage of acne in Latin America and East Asia can be explained by genetic causes, of course, but probably also by cultural factors, the most important of which is diet.”
