Oral hygiene is vital for good health… but not only that! It also plays a crucial role in social and romantic interactions. The Colgate brand has commissioned the OpinionWay polling institute to conduct a study among 18-25 year-olds to better understand the importance of oral hygiene in intimate relationships.
The survey was conducted online between May 2 and May 7, 2024. 1002 young French people were questioned.
“18-25 year-olds attach great importance to oral hygiene and breath… Both when dating and when in a relationship,” explains OpinionWay. “They indicate that these elements reinforce self-confidence. These are key concepts in the eyes of respondents, and they even believe that they can influence the durability and quality of romantic relationships.”
In fact, 92% of those surveyed said that oral hygiene and a fresh mouth are essential to making a good impression.
While health professionals recommend brushing teeth at least twice a day, 18-25 year-olds also feel it’s necessary to do so just before going on a date. In general, singles and couples say that having pleasant breath is important to them (90%).
Before joining their (future) conquest, panellists perform a general grooming. Nevertheless, they pay particular attention to their clothes (78%), oral hygiene (67%) and the condition of their hair (61%).
“For their first wake-up call with their partner, just over 1/4 of those surveyed say they get up earlier to brush their teeth for fresh breath. 20% say they do nothing, because it’s not a subject that worries them.”
