Organic cosmetics: consumer expectations and perceptions

The consumption of organic products has become a way of life for many people. But how is organic really perceived? Does it still have good press and what are the challenges ahead for this sector? To answer these questions, the OpinionWay polling institute conducted a survey and presented the results at the 2021 edition of Bio’N Days.

This study was conducted with two panels (one of 75 French people, the other of 1000 French people), interviewed between March 23, 2021 and April 27, 2021.

A context that motivates new choices

The troubled times we are going through are pushing consumers to buy products that meet new expectations. They are looking for a certain quality. This means a list of ingredients without controversial components. The preservation of the environment is an important factor for them. They are attentive to the means of production, to the energy spent during transport and to the packaging.
They are also increasingly sensitive to the working conditions of the people involved in the value chain. Consumers are keen to support local producers. This surge of solidarity has been exacerbated by the Covid-19 crisis.

Thus, the panel states that in the last 12 months, they have purchased cosmetics:
• Made in France (58%)
• Organic (55%) • Of natural origin (55%) • Without controversial ingredients (54%) • With ecological packaging (37%) • Cruelty-free (37%)
• Made by a small business (18%) • Do-it-yourself (16%)
