Responsible consumption: where do the French stand?

Consommation responsable : où en sont les Français ?

The current climate is pushing the general public to review its lifestyle. In a recent report, the ADEME (French environment and energy management agency) cross-referenced the results of several of its barometers in order to measure the state of mind of the French regarding their consumption habits. According to the agency, many people want to change their habits, but there are still obstacles.

The environmental emergency is on everyone’s mind. Today, 81% of French people are convinced that humans are responsible for the disasters caused to nature.
“51% of French people say they have suffered the consequences of climate disorders (compared to 27% in 2015). Global warming is now a tangible reality for many,” adds ADEME.
Consumers are pessimistic. 72% of them think that living conditions are becoming more and more difficult.

More minimalism

At a time when purchasing power is under attack, “83% of French people would like to live in a world where consumption takes up less space and 87% believe that rather than innovating at all costs, we should go back to basics and common sense,” explains ADEME. “Consumption exacerbates the contradictory injunctions in which the French live. Advertising, promotional offers, fashion, technological developments push them to renew their goods quickly. 20% of respondents say they find it difficult to resist commercial incentives.”

The difficulty of being “sustainable”

The ADEME report also highlights the willingness of some citizens to purchase products with a better environmental profile, but are held back by their price. 65% of French people say that buying healthy things is too expensive.
