Rappel : Entrée en application de l'IFRA 49

On this 10 May, the 49th amendment to the IFRA codes for new compositions comes into force: from today, perfumers must develop new fragrance compositions according to these standards. They will apply in their entirety, including for existing compositions, as of 10 May 2022.

The 49th Amendment to the IFRA Standards (which set the rules for the use of fragrance ingredients) was published on 10 January 2020, and brought significant changes with:
• 25 new Standards (for a total of 214 substances involved)
• About 100 existing Standards amended
• The update of the way the Standards are set with the use of the “QRA2” for sensitisation
• The inclusion of aggregate exposure
• The evolution of the number of product categories from 11 to 12 and the inclusion of new sub-categories

Initially scheduled to take effect on 10 February 2021, the implementation of these new rules has been postponed to 10 May due to the Covid-19 crisis.
As of today, new fragrance creations must therefore comply with the provisions of the 49th Amendment.
It is up to perfumers to comply and to Responsible Persons to take all appropriate measures to ensure compliance, including ensuring that their new formulations are compliant.
