A market that follows the trends of other European countries

The Croatian market for cosmetic and hygiene products amounts to approximately 300 M EUR for a population of nearly 4.4 M inhabitants. It is characterised by the presence of importers/distributors, subsidiaries of major international groups (e.g. L'Oréal, P&G, Unilever, Beiersdorf) but also local manufacturers (Saponia, Neva, Annuyer…). The annual consumption of the sector's products reaches €50 per inhabitant, compared with an EU average of around €135 per inhabitant. Medium and large food stores (Konzum, Plodine, Billa) as well as drugstores/perfumeries (DM, Müller, Kozmo, Bipa, Douglas) remain the traditional channels for the distribution of cosmetic products; however, many opportunities are emerging with the development of other distribution channels such as pharmacies (independent or chain stores), beauty/spa centres within hotels or independent as well as organic product stores. Electronic commerce, although present, is a complementary channel for products which already have a physical presence on the Croatian market and which are known by Croatian consumers.
