Where do the French buy their cosmetics?

Où les Français achètent-ils leurs cosmétiques ?

Internet site, dedicated store, supermarket… the distribution channels are multiple. But what are the preferences of the French? The question was raised in an OpinionWay survey for the marketplace Faire. The survey covers all consumer goods, but a focus was made on cosmetics.

To carry out this study, a panel of 1019 people aged 18 and over, representative of the French population, was formed. Respondents were interviewed online via a questionnaire. The sample is made up of 48% men and 52% women.

Preferred purchasing methods

When it comes to beauty products, the French shop:
• in large chain stores (in store or on the Internet) at 56%,
• in local shops at 20%,
• in independent shops (in store or on the Internet) at 15%,
• on general Internet platforms at 12%.

When we look in detail, men consume more hygiene/beauty in large chain stores than women (60% versus 54%).
On the other hand, they are more likely to do their shopping in local shops (21% versus 18%), in independent shops (16% versus 14%) and on generalist websites (9% versus 6%).

The French face the standardization of products

Every year, new cosmetic brands enter the market and the offer is plethoric. This does not prevent 40% of respondents from thinking that beauty products are standardized.
Indeed, 58% of respondents find that all products (all sectors combined) available on the market are similar. According to them :
