Packaging: Weleda's eco-responsible approach

Emballages : les démarches écoresponsables de Weleda

When you are a cosmetic brand and you want to improve your environmental profile, one of the necessary steps is to think about the packaging you use. There is no question of using too much plastic. Weleda, a pioneer brand of organic cosmetics, has also begun its transition to more virtuous solutions.

Weleda started working with recycled materials (glass and plastic). In 2020, this allowed the brand to use 40% of non-virgin materials.

Weleda intends to go further and wants to reach a target of 65% recycled materials in its containers by 2022. In detail, Weleda has already integrated PCR (Post Consumer Recycle) plastic into its packaging. For the time being, it is not yet possible to substitute 100% of this material. However, reducing the use of virgin material is.

For its order shipments (to consumers and distributors), Weleda has chosen cardboard. “Our cardboard packaging is FSC-certified and made from a mixture of fibers from FSC-certified sustainably managed forests and recycled materials. The outer cardboard packaging is used to protect the glass of the bottles. The sorting information and the percentage of recycled material have been included on all our packaging since 2021.”

The promotional elements used in stores follow the same logic. Weleda says it uses recycled and recyclable materials, vegetable inks and certified cardboard/paper. A certain consistency throughout the value chain, in short.
