Are anti-ageing creams worth the investment?

That’s the million-pound question! It’s the question that experts are asked the most often, the question that comes up the most often in interviews and articles by cosmetics journalists. It’s the question that every woman (and more and more men as well) will wonder about at some point in her life. It is the ultimate question, but can it simply be answered with a definitive ‘yes’ or ‘no’? That’s not quite our style here at CosmeticOBS… we would rather provide objective elements so that you, our readers, can judge and decide for yourselves.

Before we cut to the chase, let’s remember that, no, we can’t expect a skin cream to do everything. An investment in a cosmetic product, no matter how expensive, will ultimately result in disappointment if it isn’t accompanied by supporting measures that are more in the realm of common sense than of the technology of R&D laboratories. Let’s go over the key elements.

A good basis

There are still no emulsions or secret ingredients on the horizon. Young skin is primarily achieved (and lasts longer) by leading a healthy lifestyle.

Tried-and-true anti-ageing techniques
• Avoid long, repeated exposure to sunlight, and never go out without appropriate protection; UV radiation causes extensive damage and generates free radicals, causing the skin to age very quickly.
• Remember that smoking, in addition to putting a huge dent in your budget (thereby limiting your skin cream options?), doesn’t help in terms of free radical production and skin radiance.
• Watch out for yo-yo dieting: the skin, in order to be healthy, supple, firm, and toned, needs nutritional elements provided from within, namely fatty acids and fats, vitamins, and minerals. These come from fruit, fatty fish, the oil in the salad dressing you put on …
