Organic labels: consumer perceptions and expectations

CosmeticOBS carried out a survey of its Internet users on organic cosmetics* in January 2015. Visibility of the labels on packaging, perception of the different logos, a European organic label… here are the results for all these aspects.

‘Organic label’ refers to the logo present on the packaging of a cosmetic product intended for sale and issued by private or public organizations which guarantee the criteria established in a charter or a standard regarding the product’s organic quality or naturalness are satisfied. All private brand labels are excluded.

Over three-quarters of the consumers surveyed think organic labels are visible enough on the packaging (79%). And they are perfectly visible for 21% of them: not too small, nor hidden.
On the contrary, there is still some work to do in terms of communication and information regarding labels and their charters, what they indicate about the product and its manufacturing process, and what they provide consumers as far as organic quality or naturalness is concerned. Only 3% of the people surveyed think they are perfectly well-explained on the packaging and 56% do not think they are well-explained enough. And the results are almost the same when it comes to staff members’ perception and understanding of labels at points of sale (not well-understood enough at points of sale for 56% of the people surveyed) and their media coverage (57% think …
