Which results for ethical cosmetics ?

Quel bilan pour les cosmétiques éthiques ?

On the occasion of the Fair Trade Fortnight, organized throughout France between May 7 and 22, 2022, Ecocert held a press conference on May 11, 2022 in Paris. The objective of this event was to unveil the performance of ethical and fair trade cosmetics globally. And it is Pauline Raffaitin, Business Unit Manager Cosmetics and Household Products for the Ecocert group, who was in charge of the presentation.

The data used by Ecocert comes from several reports written by Xerfi, GreenFlex and Mintel. Today, ethics is a fast growing consumer trend.
72% of the world’s citizens are changing their habits in favor of a more sustainable lifestyle. 80% of them need proof of brands’ commitment.

In terms of cosmetics, organic and natural products are worth 6.4% of the market. Fair trade skincare products, 98% of which have been awarded the Fair For Life label by Ecocert, represent a turnover of 52 millions euros for the year 2021.

The challenges of cosmetics

Pauline Raffaitin took advantage of the event to remind us what challenges beauty professionals are facing nowadays.
These include:
• Protecting biodiversity
• Sourcing in a renewable and responsible way
• Managing water
• Limiting the use of virgin plastic
• Conducting a circular policy
• Reducing greenhouse gases
• Achieving carbon neutrality
• Being transparent

“Ethical cosmetics are therefore increasingly popular, as they demonstrate respect for the social, environmental and economic commitments of brands.
