Beiersdorf designs a 100% recycled aluminum aerosol

Beiersdorf imagine un aérosol en aluminium 100 % recyclé

The cosmetics group has designed with Nussbaum, a Swiss packaging manufacturer, an aerosol can made of totally recycled aluminum. After a year of research and development, the two partners have succeeded in their bet. These new kinds of packaging should start to be marketed by the end of 2021.

Beiersdorf and Nussbaum have created an aerosol can made from used cans with the aim of preserving the environment. The challenge of this packaging is to be part of a circular economy approach and to reduce the German group’s carbon emissions.
“Thanks to our pioneering partnership with Nussbaum, we are triggering cross-sectoral thinking along the entire value chain and reducing our carbon footprint from aerosol cans by up to 90%,” the group explains.

Aluminum, which is infinitely recyclable, has a circular profile here because it comes from the food industry. The cans recovered by Nussbaum come from the region, which also makes it possible to avoid energy-consuming and polluting transport.

Another advantage of this technology is that aluminum that is reused several times requires up to 95 percent less energy to process. In addition, the light metal does not lose any of its quality.

“For years, Beiersdorf has been working to progressively green the product formulations and packaging of all brands in its portfolio as part of its sustainability program. Our approach covers the entire value chain, including suppliers, partners and logistics companies,” Beiersdorf concludes.
