The art of spray-making

From perfumery to skincare, sun care, or makeup, all cosmetics categories come with the spray option for their final packaging. Albéa France’s Étienne Brière, Marketing Director Fine Mist, and Jean-Pierre Songbe, Innovation & Development Expert, came to the 12th edition of the PCD show (Packaging of Perfumes, Cosmetics & Design) to reveal what lies behind a ‘hiss’.

What is a spray?

To provide a technical answer to this question, Étienne Brière first gave details on the seven main features of a spray:

1/ Droplet size and distribution
‘A droplet can be 30 micrometres to 1 millimetre in diameter’, the speaker explained. Its impact on the consumer’s perception varies depending on its size: for example, the thinner the droplets, the drier the spray on the user’s skin.

2/ Spray angle
It can be of 30°, 40°, or 60°, bearing in mind that a reduced angle makes it possible to target specific areas (arms, legs, armpits, etc.), while a large angle is more efficient for immersing oneself or touching larger areas like the chest.

3/ Spatial distribution
It helps verify the spray is homogeneous enough, round, and harmonious, and it does not generate any hollow inside.

4/ Spray length
It can measure from a few centimetres to more than a metre, depending on its application in the field of cosmetics.

5/ Spray speed
‘It is the speed with which a droplet impacts the skin of a consumer’, Étienne Brière explained. ‘It also determines the gentleness of the contact, an essential parameter, in particular for facial care applications.’
