Redness and rosacea up close

Redness of the skin of the face is caused by inflammation and it is often hereditary. It primarily affects women with fine, fair skin, beginning at age 25. Crippling and unattractive, skin redness often causes embarrassment and even unfounded suspicions of alcoholism. Often occurring in sensitive and/or reactive skin, it mustn’t be confused with simple epidermal sensitivity or allergies. A correct diagnosis is important because if this condition is addressed early, the redness will be less severe and less permanent.

Different types of redness

Temporary redness or flushes . This is when the skin of the face warms and reddens for a few minutes without the blood vessels becoming visible. Triggered by stress, strong emotions, a sudden change in temperature, spicy food, or alcohol consumption, flushing cannot be controlled and signals the beginning of vascular fragility.
D iffuse redness or erythrosis . This type of redness is localised on the cheeks, nose, forehead, and sometimes the chin. Episodic at first, it eventually takes the form of permanent blotches.
Couperosis . When erythrosis becomes more severe, small, red or purple dilated blood vessels appear permanently at the surface of the skin, primarily on the cheeks and the corners …
